If you’re a Portlander who goes above and beyond in your recycling then you probably noticed some changes last year. Places like New Seasons, Whole Foods and Far West Recycling ended most of their plastic recycling. These had been great spots to take rigid plastics (lids) and plastic film/bags that couldn’t be recycled curbside. But our poor sorting habits caused China – the primary buyer of our recyclables – to back out. Major bummer! But I have a sliver of good news to report: Safeway and Albertson’s are still taking clean plastic film and bags. I saw this bin at Safeway on 39th and Powell this week … which means my “installation art” (giant orb of plastic bags in the garage) finally has somewhere to go!
